You are already naked

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like:

” If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right. ”

It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself:

” If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? ”

And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
Remembering that I‘ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to
help me make the big choices in life.
Because almost everything, all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.

You are already naked.
There is no reason not to follow your heart.

「もし今日が人生最後の日だとしたら、私が今日やろうとしていることは、 私が本当にやりたいことなのだろうか？」

それに対する答えが、”No”であることが何日も続いた時、私は何かを変える必要があると悟るのです。
私がこれまでの人生で大きな決断を迫られた時、 最も役に立った、ある重要な手段があります。
それは、「死はいつも、私と隣り合わせにある」 と考えることでした。
何故なら、他人からの期待、プライド、 屈辱や失敗に対する恐怖といったものはすべて死に直面した瞬間に意味を失くし、 残されるのは本当に重要なものだけだからです。
「何かを失ってしまうのではないか」という思考の罠。
それを避けるための、私が知りうる最良の手段は、

「自分はいつ死んでもおかしくない」
「死はいつも、自分と隣り合わせにある」

と考えることです。

あなたには、失うものなんて何も無い。
自分の心の赴くままに生きてはいけない理由なんて、 何処にも存在しないのです。
